On 5 May, South Australia's Young
Professionals ran a Speed Networking
Event allowing university and TAFE
students the opportunity to network with
industry leaders and mentors.
The event was held in the Leadership
Lab at the Adelaide University Executive
Education Unit. The event was a fantastic
success, with a sold-out number of students
and mentors from a wide range of private
companies and government organisations.
A short presentation on successful
networking by Sarah Calton, HR
professional gave both students and
mentors a few tips and tricks.
The students then had the opportunity to
network in a similar fashion to speed dat-
ing, with one-on-one networking. After the
formal networking, students and mentors
continued to network over food and drinks.
The event would not have been
possible without the sponsorship and
support of Adelaide University Executive
Education Unit, Alexander Symonds,
Fyfe, and Aerometrex.
SA Young Professionals
On Friday 27 March 2015, eight young
professionals attended the breakfast
at Adelaide Waffles on Leigh Street.
Discussion ranged from our career
aspirations to holiday destinations.
The group's openness, friendliness,
enthusiasm and energy made the
discussions enjoyable for all. Introverts
can become extroverts. These factors
coupled with the splendid aroma of
waffles made our time together a
memorable and delightful experience.

At the Victorian Young Professionals,
we held our first webinar for the year
on 15 April. Called 'Progressing your
Career', the webinar featured three
fantastic speakers who shared some of
their thoughtful insights with YP from
Adam Smith, the founder and CEO of
Geoplex provided listeners with some of
his experiences of establishing and running
his own business, and shared some im-
portant lessons learned and tips for other
entrepreneurs who might be considering
starting their own business. Would Adam
setup his own company again? YES! But
you need to have an idea that you want to
achieve, and be ready for hard work.
Robyn McCutcheon from DELWP
spoke about her experiences of working
in state government and always finding
new opportunities in different programs
and roles that she felt would expand her

when Robyn started -- her advice: keep
up-to-date and be aware of what's
happening. Participate in industry bodies,
networking, and events.
And Sebastian Leeder from Armstrong
Personnel provided some great practical
advice for anyone looking for work in the
spatial industry, to make sure you stand
out and have the competitive edge over

Also as a reminder, renewal for ESP-AP
certification is on a two-yearly basis,
with all forms available on the SSSI
website (see below). At this point a
number of certificants have allowed
for their certification to lapse. We
want to advise the renewal is a fairly
simple process, with only a two-page
listing of CPD and points required to be
submitted. You can confirm the expiry of
your certification by reading the bottom
of the certificate issued, or by checking
the published list of certified surveyors
on the SSSI website.
The following documents are now
available via the SSSI website for more
information on the renewal process:
• ESP-AP Renewal Procedures
• ESP-AP Certification Renewal

If you have any additional questions
regarding the renewal process or
information regarding the ESP-AP
Certification, please contact Bernard
O'Sullivan -- EMSC Chair through email
firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone
0407 770 900.
New chair this coming
This year is the EMSC's cycle for national
elections, and the commission will require
a new chair to be elected. As the chair
over the past four or so years, I have
found the role to be very rewarding but
cannot continue in the role once I take
up the SSSI presidency. If anyone has
an interest in this volunteer opportunity,
please feel free to call me personally and
we can discuss. This role obviously will
have me available to assist in a transition
into the commission and role.
